Movie Reviews

This year a shitload of videos have come out. If you're like me you want to own them all. However, if you're like me, you'll also be a bum and not have money to pay for em (i'm not gonna get into bootlegs and etc). So here we are, reviewing them so that your dumb ass doesn't go out a buy a movie which sucks shit.

Poor Boys Productions - Thirteen - This was probably the most hyped movie of the year. Coming hot off the heels of Degenerates, it promised to be sick. It did not dissapoint. The movie layed down all the tricks and some of the kids are going huge. There wasn't much funny shit in this movie, something I think all flicks should have, Degenerates had plenty of it, this one lacked. Thirteen is big on tricks but low on big mountain. Dan Treadway is a crazy skier, but his section sucked and he was the big mountain skier in the flick. But there's some crazy tricks thrown off cliffs. I liked how this movie selected music to suit the person, not just good music. The soundtrack was fairly good (they could have picked way better songs from the same bands though). One big flaw though, everyone hates Devo, why the hell did Johnny pick that song for Shane's section? I fucking licked. But overall, it's a great movie. 8/10

Match Stick Productions - Global Storming - Steve Winter has been known to put together sick movies and I was expecting more of the asme from him. I've never been able to watch the whole movie in one sitting for some reason so might opinion might be a bit off but who cares. There is an amazing cast to this movie with lots of guys Thirteen missed out on (Shane McConkey, Brad Holmes, Gordy Peifer, Wendy Fisher, tons). They're all sick skiers and Brad Holmes easily had the best section of the bunch. I was disappointed in the movie though, after every good section, they'd always put on some shit that licked, it wasn't able to keep a good strong vibe throughout it. Which sucked cause the movie had alot of potential. The thing that brought it down was the big mountain riding. The simply over played it. It good shit, but the quantity they used just brought it down. They also need more variey in the big mountain shots they use. If they learnt how to mix in the big mountain skiing better, the movie would just kick ass. But alas. Oh, and the soundtrack licked. 7/10

Teton Gravity Research - The Realm - TGR put out two flicks this year, one focused on new school (area 51), the other on big mountain (the realm). Both are pretty damn good. I really liked this movie, it had good flow and style and the music suited the skiing. I'm really impressed the the TGR boys this year. I wish I owned this movie actually. There's always flaw with movies, but this one was really solid. 8/10

Wind-Up Films - Clay Pigeons - I was really stoked on this movie, it had so many things going for it. Snowboarding was a part of it, the 120 foot gap, Kris Ostness and the rest of the line team... how could it go wrong? In many many ways. First and foremost, they tried to make it one of those artistic bullshit movies. Now I have nothing against that... if it works. It didn't work at all here. The yoyo's were cool though. The music licked throughout the whole thing with the exemption of Union 13 who just kick ass. The video is the shittiest quality of any movie (except for maybe Ruckus, but Ruckus is a $50 production) and yah. What did work though was the snowboarding, it was sicker then most of the skiing! Candide had a shitty section. King of the hill was sick but they didn't show the really crazy stuff (this french guy, forget his name, tried a switch back in the quarter). The gap was really cool but way overplayed, that was their big thing really. As much as I like Kris Ostness and Skogen Sprang, their section (almost non-existent) were kinda crappy, skiing was good but as a package... it sucked. It did have the absolute sickest crash tape I have ever seen though. The crash section is almost worth the cost of the movie, but not quite, you have to see the crash section at least once, it just makes feel the pain. 6/10

White Salomon Productions - The Supershow - Toben Sutherland said of this movie "It's the kind of movie you'll either really like or really not like. I liked it." So did I. The music wasn't the greatest, but it really fitted the movie and gave it this weird feeling to it. The cinematography is by far the BEST out of any ski flick I've ever seen, the vancouver local mountains are just so good to shoot. The skiers in the movie are the same as last year more or less, but they just do such an amazing job. There's very little big mountain skiing and it's mainly new school jumping and that (I loved the old school section, yah bro) but it just rocks. I dunno why, but I really enjoyed this movie, it worked on so many levels. The tricks are super sick or anything, but they're just super clean and the movie and a good flow. 9/10

Standard Films - TB8 Infinity - This was a snowboard film if you were wondering why you haven't hard of it. Well let me tell you, it's super good. The riders in it are crazy good. The music is really well suited to the riding, there's a really good flow. Everything just works in this movie. It's better assembled then any ski movie I've ever seen (there's even some skiing in it, 3 jumps only but come on). There's a good variety of riding and it's mixes in some skating too! Shaun White is just super sick. The tricks could be better but you can't have everything. An incredible movie that you should get if you're even somewhat interested in boarding. 9/10

Mack Dawg - Technical Difficulties - This was easily the best movie that's come out all year (another board flick, booya). Mack Dawg has a amazing reputation and with this flick he turns it up a notch, the riders in this flick are simply amazing (mostly the Forum team but hey, Mikey LeBlanc is sick). There are some insane rails in here too. The chicks in this movie rip too. Tina Basich is amazing. The soundtrack rips, there's a super good varity of jumps, riding, tricks, rails, the whole works. I don't know what else I can say but buy it. As a skier you'll be like "I can do that". You could probably do the trick, but nowhere near as big. The tricks are huge and clean. An amazing film. 10/10

Teton Gravity Research - Area 51 - This is easily the sickest ski movie out at the moment. It's a huck fest. In this flick are some of the most insane tricks of any flick. Music is good too, but not much variety, all metal. The movie has great coverage of the squaw valley crew and there's a bunch of stuff from king of the hill and the mammoth superpark. I've yet to see Rory Silva in any of the movies though... You know what? I'd write more but I'm tired. But Area 51 is by far the sickest ski movie of the year. But it for sure. I didn't get the gay ass plot line though. 9/10
